30 years of Border Livestock Exchange
30 years ago today “19th June 1995” Logan Brown, James Logan & Brian Ruthven teamed up to provide a marketing service to the Scottish Borders & North Northumberland.
Matching primestock to the most suitable outlets at the most competitive prices was our goal – our logo was “Less stress to both stock & producers’’
Primestock: selling over 6,000 lambs & 400 cattle weekly we were very busy from the start.
Selling our Texel Rams at Kelso Ram Sales our largest number 687 in 2 rings .. at this world famous sale
Farm sales – our first in Sept 1995 Braidhaugh Bonchester Bridge Hawick this one even included not only modern & vintage but also horse drawn equipment – lots of old worthies desperate to tell me what the various items were designed
for!
Our biggest day was on behalf of D & J Waldie Newmills Farm, Lauder (incl Boon Farm Sale & several small dispersals with inputs .. amongst it all we sold 8 combines & 17 tractors – the pressure was on to beat the darkness (although we did have flood lighting on standby)
Kelso Machinery Sales Spring & Autumn at Kelso Racecourse, inspired & assisted tremendously by 2 great friends & allies Andrew Rennie Berryhill & Richard Landale MD Kelso Racecourse. The only auction venue that didn’t need signposting.
Farm Sales & machinery auctions on-line due to COVID 19 –
Smart phones & IT took our auctions from being geographically restricted to almost global – unfortunately they’re without both the social interaction & the sale-day buzz, they’re also a big miss to “Emma & her team” and the auctioneer-:)
Prices were incredible our previous onfarm top price a combine at Press Mains Farm, Eyemouth stood for almost 10yrs at £131,000 – our current top is a combine from Floors Farming Kelso at £254,000 (Braidhaugh with a full inventory was sub £10,000)
Farm to Farm sales- these have increased ten fold quite recently with complete herds of suckler cows & flocks of sheep being sold on a regular basis.
Both store sheep & all classes of cattle are sold weekly – once went to France from Berwick with 3300 store lambs in 2005 – took 14 borders farmers to France in 2007!
Highest value single sale was this spring when 178 Charolais cross yearlings realised over £350,000.
We’re extremely grateful to all the people that have supported us & do support us so well. Thank you.
There’s been loads of change in our first 30yrs with the unmentionable … hurdles & potholes but also more importantly meeting loads of interesting people with lots of fantastic sale days and adventures.
We’re looking forward to continuing to provide an efficient service with our trademark humour for at least the next 50 years.
